A modern SWRO plant with energy recovery runs roughly 2.5 to 4.5 kWh per cubic metre of permeate, depending on feed salinity, temperature, recovery, and how much of the figure includes intake and distribution pumping. Without an energy recovery device the same plant would sit near 8 kWh/m3, which is why a pressure exchanger or turbocharger is standard at municipal scale rather than an upgrade option.
Reverse osmosis removes almost all dissolved minerals, including the calcium and alkalinity that make water chemically stable. The resulting permeate is soft, low in buffering capacity, and aggressive toward cement linings and metal pipe in the distribution network. Remineralization - typically lime or calcite contact with carbon dioxide - restores hardness and alkalinity to a target that leaves the water slightly scale-forming rather than corrosive, and it also improves taste.
Civil works and pressure vessels are normally specified for decades, while the consumable and rotating items turn over much faster: membranes typically every 5 to 7 years depending on fouling, cartridge filters continuously, and high-pressure pump and energy recovery device service intervals per the manufacturer. Budget the plant on that replacement profile rather than on installed cost alone.
Concentrate management is a permitting question as much as an engineering one, and it is frequently the critical path on the schedule. Coastal plants normally use a diffuser outfall designed so the discharge mixes to near-ambient salinity within a defined mixing zone. Inland brackish plants have harder choices - deep well injection, evaporation ponds, or further concentration toward zero liquid discharge - and the selected route should be settled before the plant layout is fixed.
