Built-in Fire Protection & Explosion Prevention

Fire safety in the PowerCombo is engineered as defense in depth — prevent, detect, suppress, and vent. Inherently stable LFP chemistry, ±2.5 mV cell-level monitoring, and liquid cooling keep thermal events from starting. If a cell ever off-gasses, dedicated gas detectors catch it in seconds and a UL Listed panel orchestrates the response — clean-agent suppression, CFD-validated explosion-prevention ventilation, and a firefighter water connection. The explosion-prevention design is documented in a P.E.-signed NFPA 69 CFD modeling report (Atar Fire, LLC, Nov 2025), available with the full certification package for your AHJ, fire marshal, and insurer.

H₂ & CO Gas Detection

Dedicated hydrogen and carbon-monoxide detectors watch for battery off-gassing — the earliest signature of thermal runaway — and trigger ventilation and alarms before smoke or flame develops.

NFPA 69 Explosion Prevention

On gas detection, a combustible-concentration-reduction (CCR) system — exhaust fan plus makeup-air inlet — purges the enclosure. CFD fire-dynamics modeling verifies flammable gas stays below 25% of the lower flammability limit, the NFPA 69 design threshold.

FK-5-1-12 Clean Agent

On fire detection, an electronics-safe, residue-free clean agent floods the enclosure — suppressing fire in seconds without destroying the battery bay, PCS, or controls it protects.

UL Listed Fire Control Panel

A Listed detection-and-control panel supervises the gas detectors, releases suppression, sounds alarms, and executes equipment shutdown sequences — with dry contacts for site fire-alarm integration.

Dry-Pipe Sprinkler + FD Connection

A factory-piped manual dry sprinkler system with an exterior fire-department connection lets responding crews flood the enclosure with water immediately — without opening a door.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the containerized ESS UL 9540 certified?

Yes. The PowerCombo containerized BESS is certified to ANSI/CAN/UL 9540:2023 for the US and Canada by TÜV Rheinland of North America (cTUVus mark, certificate CU 72605233 0001, issued January 2026). Battery strings are additionally certified to UL 1973 and IEC 62619 with UL 9540A fire propagation test data and UN 38.3 transport testing. Certification documents are available for AHJ and engineering review on request.

What fire protection does the containerized BESS include?

Fire protection is layered. Dedicated hydrogen and carbon-monoxide gas detectors sense battery off-gassing at the earliest stage and trigger a combustible-concentration-reduction (CCR) ventilation system that CFD modeling verifies keeps flammable gas below 25% of the lower flammability limit, per NFPA 69. A UL Listed fire control panel supervises detection, alarms, and shutdowns; an FK-5-1-12 clean-agent system suppresses fire without damaging equipment; and a factory-piped manual dry-pipe sprinkler with an exterior fire-department connection gives responding crews immediate water access. The explosion-prevention design is documented in a P.E.-signed NFPA 69 CFD engineering report, and the system is designed for NFPA 855 installations.

What is a containerized energy storage system (ESS)?

A containerized ESS packages battery storage, power conversion, thermal management, fire suppression, and controls inside a weatherproof shipping container for turnkey deployment. The PowerCombo series delivers up to 3,086 kWh and 1,600 kW from a single 20-ft HQ ISO container using liquid-cooled LFP battery strings.

What battery chemistry is used and how long does it last?

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells rated 3.2 V / 314 Ah, with a cycle life of 8,000 cycles to 70% capacity retention at 0.5C and 25°C. LFP chemistry is favored for stationary storage because of its thermal stability and long service life.

What can a containerized ESS be used for?

Peak shaving and demand management, time-of-use load shifting, backup power, renewable energy smoothing for solar and wind, voltage and frequency support, and microgrid construction. The GridPoint Controller supports time-of-use, peak shaving, flexibility service, renewable smoothing, and grid-forming operating modes.

How is the system sized and priced?

Capacity is engineered to your load profile and runtime requirements, from a single container to multi-container installations. Because each ESS is custom-configured, pricing is provided via Request-for-Quote, and financing options are available.
