Size the plant for design-peak occupancy plus storage, then check the turndown case: a plant that can only run efficiently at full load will be expensive in the off season. Yes, once it is post-treated. Raw RO permeate is very low in dissolved minerals, which makes it taste flat and leaves it chemically aggressive toward pipework. Remineralization to a target hardness and alkalinity, followed by disinfection with a residual, produces water that meets drinking water standards and tastes like good bottled water. Skipping this step is the most common reason guests complain about the taste.
Yes, and on off-grid islands it is often the strongest economic case rather than just a sustainability one, because the alternative is diesel. A solar-hybrid design shifts most production into daylight hours, uses battery storage to smooth the RO train through cloud transients, and keeps the generator as backup. The practical limit is roof and land area, so the split between solar and generator is set by the site.
The high-pressure pump is the dominant noise source and it is genuinely loud, which matters when the plant room is anywhere near guest areas. Acoustic enclosures, vibration isolation on the pump skid, flexible pipe connections, and careful plant-room siting bring it down to background level. Raise this at design stage, because retrofitting acoustic treatment around an installed plant is awkward and expensive.
